Highlights from the San Diego Union Article about Interfaith's Escondido Facility

  • They absolutely are a drain on that area and the businesses around them. -Escondido Mayor Dane White

  • Officials said the site was often in the city’s top 10 locations when it came to calls for service

  • Officials had recorded around 230 as of September, which potentially put the facility on track to re-break 300. (A records request for updated numbers is pending.)  The main reason police showed up was to investigate a “disturbance,” according to data from the beginning of 2021 through late last year. Trespassing, mental health evaluations and welfare checks were also near the top.  There were 20 instances of “drug activity” and seven for “loitering” during that two-plus year period. “Battery,” fights, domestic violence, grand theft, rape and other alleged crimes each logged four or fewer calls.

  • Furthermore, the chief believed Interfaith violated its permit when the nonprofit moved residents of the Haven House shelter — which was struggling financially partially because federal relief money had run low — to the nearby Abraham & Lillian Turk Recuperative Care Center.
